Sewing Bee took us to Japan this week with a spotlight on Origami, Boro, Sashiko and Kimonos. There was a fabulous soundtrack to the episode and the ever fascinating history spotlight which featured
“Swinging Sleeve” Inspiration
Want to try a Furi or “swinging sleeve” Kimono-style robe similar to the one from the show? Melissa Watson for McCall’s has this design feature on her M7790 dress and robe pattern.
As it’s currently HALF PRICE maybe you’ll also like Burda pattern 6244 which has two styles of Kimono-inspired jackets included. We love the neck ruffle on the full length version.
SASHIKO STITCHING
Sashiko and Boro are both intertwined in history but not interchangeable. Sashiko refers to the style of embroidery, whereas the word Boro meaning rags or tattered cloth and indicates the textiles used rather than how they are put together.
Read our ideas for introducing a modern hand stitched detail to your next project. Learn the supplies you’ll need and the best patterns to try this technique.
