Our Best Trench Coat Sewing Patterns
Have you ever thought of sewing your own Trench Coat? Before we look at our trench coat sewing patterns, lets have a look at what characterises a Trench Coat. A trench coat is a variety of coat made of waterproof heavy-duty fabric. The coat was typically sewn in khaki, and double-breasted, belted, with wide lapels, shoulder epaulets and deep pockets.
Worn by senior ranks in the war it was most commonly worn with a hat or cap so doesn’t include a hood. Storm shields were designed to increase run off of water down the back and storm flaps designed to fasten upwards and close off the neckline from water.
After World War I, the trench coat quickly became a fashion staple and symbol of sophistication as Hollywood icons like Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn popularised the trench coat in daily wear. And as a fashionable iteration developed, some details were dropped or changed. It’s not uncommon to see flaps on modern trench coats that look like storm flaps, but they either do not have buttons, or do not reach far enough to help button the coat shut. Similarly shoulder epaulets are often missed off. And hem vents don’t always include buttons as an optional closure on windy days.
The wonderful thing about sewing your own trench jacket or coat is that you can add as many (or as few) of the traditional details as you like! We have trench coat and jacket patterns for women, men and children plus modern takes on the silhouette like trench capes. For beginners we recommend the Simplicity 8554 easy trench coat pattern. But for those looking to create a traditional style, we recommend Vogue 2055 or McCall’s 8246. For extra support try Know Me 2070 which includes a detailed video sewalong.
