Pattern Favourites: High Waist Trousers and Shorts

High-waist trousers are definitely back in fashion (must say I love them too). Also known as high-rise trousers, we’re talking about trousers and shorts that have a waistline positioned higher on the torso than traditional mid-rise or low-rise trousers.

They can provide a more elongated appearance to the legs overall lengthen the silhouette by accentuating the waist and elongating the torso. High-waist trousers were particularly popular in fashion during the mid-20th century, especially in the 1940s and 1950s. They have experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years, because as we know, fashion trends often revisit styles from the past – so it’s no surprise we have a LOT of high-waisted trouser sewing patterns. Plus plenty of high-waisted shorts if you’re sewing for warmer weather.

The defining characteristic of high-waist trousers is that the waistband sits higher on the torso, typically above the natural waistline and closer to the belly button or even slightly above it. This results in a longer rise, the distance from the crotch seam to the waistband, compared to mid-rise or low-rise trousers. We have a variety of leg shapes for our high-waist trouser patterns with palazzo, tailored, culottes, pleated and elastic waist options. There are also a few leg options for our high-waisted shorts patterns. Plus you can pick designs with yokes, belt looks and a range of pockets!
