Dress patterns edit: Wrap dress
A wrap dress is one of those classic pieces in your wardrobe that can take you through all seasons. We’re so glad that wrap dresses have made a massive comeback this year, and we thought it’s about time to have a look at some different styles. From a sophisticated full wrap dress in a woven fabric to a faux wrap dress in a knit fabric, we’ve gathered a few of our favourite designs.
WHAT IS A WRAP DRESS?
A dress that wraps around the body and fastens at the waist, most commonly with ties. Most designs have a v-neckline and people enjoy wearing them because they fit easily.
The back piece is cut on the fold as a single piece, and the front portions are created with excess fabric extending beyond the centre front, to form the wrap. The under wrap is either secured in the side seam of the dress with a hidden fastening, or a long tie is fed through an opening in the seam. Similarly the outer wrap is either fastened at the side seam or has a long tie attached to it.
From mini to maxi, there are many different types of wrap dress patterns available and made from a variety of fabric types, including lightweight cotton to stable knits.

That’s right! We’ve reissued several Diane von Furstenberg Vintage Vogue Patterns 1970s Front Wrap Dresses. V2000 is a front wrapped dress, three inches below mid-knee or evening length with fitted bodice, slightly gathered at front and tucked at back into waistline, has fitted and flared skirt and attached tie ends that tie at side front or centre back. Full-length sleeves have pointed cuffs with button trim. With or without pointed collar, and topstitched trim.

This beautiful real wrap dress is a timeless piece that will be perfect to wear to multiple occasions from casual chic to a stylish wedding. It features different romantic ruffle options, hankerchief hems plus sleeve and length variations.

PATTERN: SIMPLICITY 8013.
This nostalgic faux wrap front dress from the 1970’s is a showstopper! The dress is fully lined and can be made in two lengths with either bishop or bell sleeves. Add the sash for an extra fabulous design detail.

PATTERN: BUTTERICK 4790.
A different kind of wrap; the vintage walk away dress from 1952! This pattern only has three pattern pieces, it has darts in the front and back, and back waist and shoulder seams. This design is so different because the back wraps around to the front for a sheath-and-overskirt look.

PATTERN: BUTTERICK B6054.
This wrap dress is just as fabulous as comfortable as it’s designed for knitted fabrics. It is fitted, and the fabric is beautifully gathered into the waist seam on the right. The deep V-neckline and shaped right front skirt are details that make this pattern a must have in your wardrobe.

PATTERN: VOGUE V1734.
