The UK’s Biggest Pattern House

Sewing trends: Little House on the Prairie gets a facelift

Modern Prairie Style

Even in the midst of summer, it’s never too early to start thinking about adding to your handmade wardrobe. In the UK, the transition from Summer to Autumn can be a tricky one with an unpredictable climate. It’s a good opportunity to look at your handmade wardrobe and see where the gaps are and sew up some garments that can be layered depending on the weather.

Do you look to the high street for inspiration on what to sew next? We’ve been exploring all the latest fashion trends to hit the cat walk and wanted to share some inspiration with you for your next make. One of the biggest trends this year will be prairie style where we see a modern take on the cowgirl/ cowboy look. This is a natural evolution for the seventies style we have been seeing on the high street for the last couple of years.

There are some key features of the modern prairie look, think floaty floral dresses, plaid shirts and multiple gathering layers. Your handmade makes can be accessorised by embellishing them with fringing, faux-leather detailing and pairing with boots.

We have been searching through all the sewing pattern collections to bring you some great patterns that can be sewn up to recreate these looks.

Dresses

Simplicity Cynthia Rowley 8636

We absolutely love this new pattern from Cynthia Rowley with its gathered yoke and hem, it’s a great modern take on the prairie look. It would be a perfect sewing pattern to use a mix of complementary ditsy florals, contrasting the yoke and hem with the bodice. Pair with some boots to finish the look.

Very Easy Vogue® Patterns 9311

Our second sewing pattern suggestion is the Very Easy Vogue® Patterns 9311, which is more fitted and comes with two versions. We love the double bust pleat and empire line waist, which gives plenty of volume to the skirt. This dress would look great in a printed drapey rayon or cotton lawn and the gathered sleeve version is particularly on trend right now.

New Look 6550

This New Look 6550 off the shoulder dress is a really quick make. It has two length and sleeve versions so you can mix and match to create the look you want. You can also combine this dress with another high street trend by sewing it up in plaid fabrics.

Outfits

McCall’s 7758

Vogue® Patterns 9257

To give an ultra modern look to this trend, try combining co-ordinating separates, such as the McCall’s 7758 gathered top and wide legged cropped trousers or the Vogue® Patterns 9257 elasticated ruffle top with wide legged trousers. Both these tops would look stunning made from lace and matched with plain fabric for the trousers. Embellish with the addition of tassels or fringing.

Separates

Simplicity 1110

This Simplicity 1110 tiered skirt is bang on trend with the addition of pompom trims in the tiers of the skirt. Try using different prints for each tier or a bold neon pom pom trim to make a statement. Wear with boots or sandals and add extra impact pairing this skirt with the top below, tucking it in at the waist.

McCall’s 7545

We love this McCall’s 7545 top as it gives you the opportunity to experiment with border prints. Pair with skinny or boot cut jeans and camel boots for the all American look. Embellish with bold coloured tassels to make the outfit pop!
