Pattern Favourites – half-zip jumpers

A half-zip sweater can add instant cosy vibes to your wardrobe as well as being fun to sew. This week I pulled out all my knitwear to try and snap out of a quarantine-induced style rut and assess what I had.

Inspiration from Eloquii, Anthropologie and Everlane.

I realised that the half-zip pullover ticked virtually every box and would be a great addition to my knitwear drawer: comfortable, fashion-forward, and (this is the important bit) versatile enough to pair with leggings, jeans, skirts and dresses!

Whether sewn in jersey, ribbed knit, fleece, or teddy fabric, you can create the perfect look using our patterns.

First up Try M8240 for a placket style front. The silhouette paired with this camel colour, feels fresh and classic at the same time. I’d make in striped waffle print knit for a coastal look or floral sweatshirting for a more casual vibe.

Snap up this cute top, stat! Simplicity 9182 is a Mimi G indie pattern design with a oversized collar and classic zip front. The hem band and cuffs add modern shaping.

The cool yoke detail on McCall’s 8343 extends into a funnel neck and closes with a half-zip. Perfect for colour blocking if you have scraps of sweatshirting to use up!

For a sporty take on the trend, opt for McCall’s 8143 which features a kangaroo patch pocket at the front and slight funnel neck half-zip closure. That raised neckline is perfect for chillier weather.

Most half-zips lean oversized, but I like the figure-hugging look of this sporty half-zip. Simplicity 9328 is perfect for slinky knits and spandex mix fabric. Simply hem at the hip to make this half-zip dress into a half-zip top. I love the neon colours of yellow with the orange zip in our envelope sample.

Looking for a full zip instead? M8019 is the one. The drop shoulder and optional seamlines of this full zip fleece make it casual and cosy. This would be a great project to practice using teddy fabric or sherpa fleece.

Last but not least… Swingy, sexy and a oh so cool, Brooklyn AKA M8138 is actually a Learn to Sew Pattern! You can even leave off the zipper if you like for a full turtleneck style.
